The business newspaper “DownloadFinanz und Wirtschaft (PDF, 1 MB)” reported how China became a central node in the complex global production networks. The value chain of the iPhone serves as an example. The US–China trade war puts such global value chains/supply chains at risk. Prof. Dr. Stephan M. Wagner emphasized that supply chains cannot be adapted easily and quickly. Also, supply chain are by far not only about cost. Instead, firms increasingly rely on their supply chains, i.e. suppliers, for technology and innovation. He said that it is an illusion that trade barriers help to regain innovative capabilities that now reside with outside and foreign suppliers.
