Global Impact: HumOSCM Lab contributes to Emergency Public Health Policy in Uganda
After two years of collaboration with the HumOSCM lab, the government of Uganda and it's ministries have signed off an Emergency Preparedness policy, in the form of a National Medical Countermeasures Plan, for its medical supply chain.
In a country, where epidemic disease outbreaks are recurrent events, emergency preparedness is a priority for health authorities. After two years of work on the emergency preparedness of its medical supply chain, recommendations by ETH’s HumOSCM Lab have been integrated into Uganda’s policies: the National Medical Countermeasures Plan was signed off in 2024 by all the stakeholder ministries in Uganda.
The final ministerial approval marks a milestone in implementing the Chair of Logistics Management's findings for global impact. Uganda’s National Medical Countermeasures Plan for Public Health Emergencies now draws on research findings and empirical evidence to improve prevention, detection, and response capabilities.
Learnings from the recent COVID-19 pandemic suggest that ETH’s research findings are applicable not only to developing countries which battle diseases like Ebola. They can potentially support all ministries of health working on emergency preparedness and response.
