The Engineering for Humanitarian Action initiative gathered its
grantees that collaborate with the International Committee of the Red
Cross. The HumOSCM Lab presented its work on “AI for Forecasting and
Demand Planning” and participated in a fruitful exchange in Bern.
The external page Engineering for Humanitarian Action initiative (EHA) held its annual grantees workshop in Bern on June 23. Gino Lancho and Maximilian Löffel attended the event on behalf of the HumOSCM Lab at the Chair of Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
EHA is a successful collaboration between the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), ETH Zurich, and EPF Lausanne, marking its fifth anniversary and aiming to leverage scientific and technical expertise to support humanitarian action.
Gino Lancho presented the latest insights from the project “AI for Forecasting and Demand Planning,” in which our group collaborates with the ICRC’s supply chain department. The project has been generously funded through a Humanitarian Action Challenge research grant since autumn 2024. Gino first presented the project status, which aims to develop and evaluate an AI-based solution to support data-driven demand forecasting at the ICRC. Moreover, he elaborated on learnings from effectively working together with a humanitarian organization, which the group has been doing since 2020.
With the event gathering all current and recent grantees, the diversity of projects became once again apparent, underlining the initiative’s ambition and sparking a wealth of discussions between all involved researchers and practitioners. Gilles Carbonnier, ICRC Vice President and co-initiator of the partnership, stressed in his remarks the importance of innovation in times of numerous humanitarian crises and current turmoil in the sector.
